SECOND EAR

Privacy Policy

Second Ear records a doctor visit so you can get a plain-language summary and a list of things to do. The recording, the transcript and the summary stay on your iPhone. This page explains exactly what that means.

On your iPhone. Not on a server of ours.

This version of Second Ear has no account, no server of ours, no analytics and no advertising. We do not receive your recordings, your parent's details or anything you write in the app.

What Second Ear stores, and where

Everything below is stored only on your device, inside the app:

The recordings folder and the app’s database are marked so that iCloud Backup and computer backups skip them, and recordings are protected by iOS Data Protection. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your device. Because these items are excluded from backups, they are not restored to a new phone.

Microphone and speech recognition

Second Ear asks for microphone access to record a visit, and speech recognition access to turn that recording into text. Recording only starts after you pass a consent step. Transcription uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and the summary is written by Apple’s on-device language model, so the audio and text are not sent to us or to any other company by the app. These features are provided by iOS (iOS may itself download a speech language model from Apple when you first use a language; that is Apple’s service, not ours), and are governed by Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Reminders

Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your phone. Their text is generic (“You have a reminder from a recent visit”) and never contains health details, so nothing sensitive shows on your lock screen.

Exporting a summary as a PDF

You can create a PDF of a visit summary to share. The PDF is only created when you ask for it. It is built on your phone, kept in a private folder excluded from backups, and removed after you share it. Any copy left over is deleted the next time the app opens once it is more than one hour old. Once you send a PDF to someone through the iOS share sheet, it is in their hands and this policy no longer covers it.

The person you care for, and recording others

The recordings, transcripts and summaries you make with Second Ear are about someone else’s health: they can contain diagnoses, medications and other health information about the person you care for, and the voices of their doctors. We treat that as sensitive, which is why it stays on your phone.

A visit involves other people: the parent or relative you care for, and the doctor and staff. Second Ear is meant to be used by a caregiver with the permission of the person they are caring for. By recording, you confirm that you have that person’s permission, and that you will follow the laws where you are about recording conversations; some places require everyone in the conversation to agree. We do not receive these recordings, so we cannot check this for you.

No medical advice

Second Ear is a note-taking tool, not a medical device or a health professional. Summaries only restate what was said in the visit, and each line links back to the moment in the transcript. Transcription and summaries can be wrong. Check anything important against the recording and with the doctor’s office. Never delay or change care because of something in this app. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.

Tracking and third parties

Second Ear contains no analytics, advertising, attribution or crash-reporting SDKs, no third-party code libraries, and no networking code of its own. It does not use the Advertising Identifier and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites. The only parties involved are Apple, through the iOS features named above, and anyone you personally share a PDF with.

This version does not create web links to your summaries and does not upload recordings, transcripts or summaries anywhere. If a later version adds sharing by link or an optional cloud mode, this policy will be updated and the new behaviour will be off until you choose it.

Purchases

This version of Second Ear has no in-app purchases or subscriptions.

Children

Second Ear is intended for adults and is not directed at children. It does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

Your rights

Laws such as the GDPR and CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data a company holds about you. We hold none: your data lives only on your device and you control it. You can delete it by deleting the app.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date. If a future version of Second Ear sends anything off your device or adds a third party, we will say so here before that version is released.
